Tsavo East & Tsavo West

Tsavo East and Tsavo West are two of the most popular national parks in Kenya for a safari holiday. Located to the east and west of Nairobi respectively, they offer a diverse range of landscapes and wildlife, making them an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts.

Tsavo East, characterized by its vast open plains, is the larger of the two parks and is renowned for its large herds of elephants. It is also home to the infamous man-eating lions of Tsavo, which terrorized railway workers in the 1890s. In contrast, Tsavo West boasts a more rugged terrain, with rocky hills and gorges, and is known for its marshy lake and diverse bird life.

While both parks offer a wide range of accommodation options, Tsavo East is considered the better option for a safari holiday due to its larger size and less crowded atmosphere. The park offers everything from luxury lodges to budget-friendly campsites, catering to a wide range of budgets.

In terms of wildlife, both parks are home to a variety of species, but Tsavo East is known for its large herds of elephants and predators like lions and leopards. Tsavo West, on the other hand, is known for its bird life and smaller mammals such as antelopes and gazelles.

Wildlife in Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Kenya and is home to an incredible array of wildlife species. Visitors to the park have the opportunity to see some of the most iconic African animals in their natural habitat, including elephants, lions, giraffes, and a variety of bird species.

The park is known for its large population of elephants, with over 12,000 individuals roaming the savannah grasslands and dense forests. Visitors can witness these majestic creatures up close and personal, observing their behavior and interactions with one another.

In addition to elephants, Tsavo National Park is also home to the "big five" - lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, and rhinos. These iconic mammals are a must-see for any safari enthusiast and provide visitors with a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience.

Birdwatching in Tsavo National Park is another popular activity, with over 500 bird species to be seen. Some of the bird species that can be spotted in the park include the African fish eagle, the lilac-breasted roller, and the yellow-billed stork.

Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary

Tsavo National Park is one of the last remaining strongholds for the critically endangered Eastern Black Rhino. The park is home to a significant population of these rhinos, thanks in large part to the efforts of conservation organizations like the Tsavo Trust.

The Tsavo Trust is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife in Tsavo National Park, with a particular focus on rhino conservation. The organization works to protect and monitor the rhino population in the park, as well as to educate local communities and visitors about the importance of rhino conservation.

Tourists visiting Tsavo National Park have the opportunity to witness these incredible animals in their natural habitat, often with the help of experienced guides who work with the Tsavo Trust. Visitors can take guided game drives or walking safaris to view these magnificent creatures up close and personal.

Best Time to Visit

To make the most of your safari adventure, it's important to consider the best time of year to visit.

The best time to visit Tsavo National Park is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. During this period, the weather is warm and dry, and the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot wildlife. The dry season is also a great time to see animals gathering around water sources, making it an ideal time for game viewing.

Additionally, the dry season is the peak tourist season, which means that the park can be crowded, and the rates for accommodations may be higher. However, the crowds are a testament to the park's popularity and the incredible wildlife on display.

If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, the months of January to March and November to December can be a good time to visit Tsavo National Park. These periods are during the shoulder seasons when the crowds are fewer, and the rates for accommodations may be lower. However, it's important to note that the weather during these periods can be unpredictable, with occasional rain showers.

It's also worth considering that different wildlife species may be more active during different seasons. For instance, the dry season is a great time to see elephants, lions, and leopards, while the wet season from November to May is the best time to see migratory birds.
